Dark Hedges

Planted by the Stuart family in the 18th century, this striking avenue of beech trees was designed to impress visitors approaching their Georgian mansion, Gracehill House. More than two centuries on, the trees remain an impressive landmark and are now one of Northern Ireland’s most photographed natural attractions.

About

Fans of HBO’s Game of Thrones® will recognise this iconic avenue of beech trees as the Kingsroad, one of the most memorable routes in the series. The dramatic setting featured in Season 2, Episode 1, The North Remembers, where Arya Stark travels north in disguise alongside Yoren, Gendry and Hot Pie on their journey to the Night’s Watch.

Today, visitors can walk the same atmospheric stretch of road, taking in the cinematic scenery that brought one of television’s most famous fantasy worlds to life.

Beyond its on-screen fame, the avenue is a striking place to visit in its own right. The intertwined branches form a natural canopy overhead, creating a moody, tunnel-like effect that changes with the seasons.

Whether you are stopping for photos, for a quiet stroll, or simply to take in the atmosphere, it offers a rare chance to experience a real-world location that feels lifted straight from Westeros.
