Translink is carrying out a feasibility study into reopening rail services to Limavady, Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has confirmed.

In response to a question from East Londonderry MLA Alan Robinson, the minister said the proposal is part of a long-term vision to enhance the Belfast-Derry line.

“Following on from the All-Island Strategic Rail Review, Translink has undertaken a preliminary study to identify the rail infrastructure requirements for a new station at Limavady,” she said. “This would require a spur off the main line and additional passing loops.”

The All-Island Strategic Rail Review, published in 2023, recommended a range of improvements to the north-west rail network, including a potential new line between Portadown and Londonderry, extra passing loops, and new stations—including at Limavady and Ballykelly.

The estimated cost of improvements is between £100m and £200m, though the review notes challenges with upgrades along the coastal route to Coleraine.

Limavady last had rail services in 1950, when its passenger station closed. The branch line, opened in 1852, was fully shut by 1955. Its junction station remained open until 1976.

In the short term, Translink has submitted a business case for more frequent services on the Derry line. Proposals include an hourly Sunday service, an earlier train to connect with Dublin-bound services, and an extended late-night service from Belfast to Derry.

Minister Kimmins said the department is reviewing the costs, adding: “We are committed to improving connectivity to the North-West, despite ongoing financial pressures.”
