Repairs To Benone Boardwalks To Be Considered By Council Committee
Dec 11, 2025
Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council will next week consider plans to repair and replace sections of the ageing boardwalk network at Benone’s coastal duneland.
A report prepared for councillors states that much of the wooden boardwalk, installed in 1987 and extended in 2004, has deteriorated due to its exposure to the coastal environment. The network covers more than a kilometre of the Magilligan Special Area of Conservation and provides access between the beach and the holiday and leisure park.
One section, Marram Way, is said to be in an advanced state of deterioration and now poses safety concerns. Parts of Longboard Way and Kestrel Way also require work, with around 150 metres identified for replacement.
Two options have been presented for consideration. The first involves removing and replacing all three boardwalks with composite or hardwood paths at an estimated cost of £285,800. The second focuses on fully replacing Marram Way and renewing parts of the other two routes at an estimated cost of £153,500.
If councillors agree, officers will begin the first stage of the council’s Capital Works Process, which includes scoping, feasibility work and outline design.
