Plans Submitted For Tourist Cabins Near Portstewart

A planning application has been submitted for the development of 12 short-let tourist cabins on land around 240 metres west of 15 Drumslade Road, near Portstewart.

According to the design and access statement, the proposal would see the cabins built within part of an existing farm cluster located between Coleraine and Portstewart, close to the River Bann. The development would include associated access arrangements, landscaping and parking areas.

The cabins are intended to operate as short-stay tourist accommodation, with each unit containing a sleeping area, kitchenette, living space and shower facilities. The structures would have a maximum height of around 3.5 metres, with timber cladding and zinc roofing proposed to help the buildings blend into the surrounding countryside.

Plans indicate that vehicles would park at a designated area near the existing access, with guests walking to the cabins via gravel paths running through the fields. Existing hedgerows would be retained and additional landscaping introduced to help screen the development from surrounding views.

The design statement also notes that the site lies close to National Cycle Network Route 93, and suggests the development could support tourism activity in the wider area, encouraging visitors to explore nearby walking and cycling routes along the Causeway Coast.

Renewable energy features are proposed, including solar panels on each cabin, alongside low-energy lighting and locally sourced materials where possible.

The application will be considered by planners at Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council as part of the normal planning process.
