Plans Submitted For New Classrooms At Limavady High School

Plans have been submitted for two new extensions at Limavady High School which would provide four additional classrooms and new facilities for pupils.

The proposals, submitted on behalf of the Education Authority, relate to the school’s existing campus on Irish Green Street and seek full planning permission for two single-storey extensions.

The development would include four classrooms, ancillary accommodation and a new safe play area, as well as the relocation of an existing storage unit.

According to the supporting planning statement, one of the extensions, known as SP25, would provide two special provision classrooms alongside changing facilities, stores, toilets and a large multi-purpose area.

An external play area and canopy would also be created to provide sheltered outdoor space.

The planning documents state that these facilities are intended for pupils who are currently being accommodated in two temporary modular units within the school grounds.

A second extension, SP26, would provide a general classroom and a music classroom.

It would also contain a Head of Department office, music practice and recording facilities and a dedicated music equipment store.

The documents state that this accommodation is required for pupils who are expected to be displaced by forthcoming refurbishment and reconfiguration works elsewhere within the school.

No increase in pupil numbers

The planning statement says the development would not lead to an increase in the number of pupils attending Limavady High School.

As a result, the proposal is not expected to generate a material increase in traffic or parking demand, with the school's existing access arrangements remaining in place.

The proposed extensions have been designed to complement the existing school buildings, with their height, roof forms and materials intended to reflect the surrounding campus.

No changes are proposed to the existing site access, while the plans have also been designed to maintain emergency vehicle access to the rear of the school.
Limavady High School forms part of a shared campus with St Mary's, with previous development having included a shared entrance and extensions to the front of both schools.

The supporting statement concludes that the latest proposals represent a "logical and proportionate expansion" of the school and would provide additional fit-for-purpose accommodation while making use of the existing educational site.

The planning application will now be considered through the normal planning process.
