A planning application has been submitted for a new residential development on the former GAA grounds at Leyland Road in Ballycastle.

The proposal relates to land located east of Clare Court and west of Gortamaddy Drive and would form Phase 2 of a wider housing development already underway on the site.

The application seeks permission for 31 residential units comprising five detached houses, 16 semi-detached homes, six townhouses and four apartments. Associated landscaping, access roads, parking areas and other site works are also included within the proposal.

According to the planning statement submitted with the application, the site was formerly used by McQuillan GAC before the club relocated to larger facilities on Whitepark Road. The land has remained vacant for around 20 years.

The wider site already benefits from planning approval for an earlier phase of development comprising 12 dwellings, which is currently under construction. Access to the proposed Phase 2 development would be provided through this existing development.

Planning consultants acting on behalf of Lisbreen Homes Limited state that a previous application for part of the site was refused in 2025 due to drainage-related concerns and a number of design issues. The new application includes a drainage assessment and revised house designs intended to address those concerns.

The plans include a central public open space measuring approximately 1,470 square metres, representing just over 10% of the Phase 2 site area. The development would also include footpaths, visitor parking spaces, traffic-calming features and new tree planting throughout the scheme.

Planning documents indicate that seven of the proposed units, including four apartments and three townhouses, are intended to be delivered as affordable housing, accounting for around 20% of the development.

The application will now be considered by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council in due course.
