Plans Lodged For Refurbishment Of Ballymoney Fire Station

Plans have been submitted for the refurbishment and extension of Ballymoney Fire Station as part of proposals to modernise the emergency services facility.

The application relates to the existing fire station at 31 Market Street, Ballymoney, and would see the building upgraded while retaining its current use.

Proposals include a reconfiguration of the station's internal layout and the construction of an extension to provide additional facilities including a gym, kit room, toilet and shower accommodation.

The existing roof would also be replaced, while external alterations would include replacement windows and doors and the creation of new window and door openings.

Plans also include upgrading the building's external render with an insulated system, alongside resurfacing works around the perimeter of the site and the installation of security fencing.

Documents submitted in support of the application state that the extension and refurbishment are intended to improve the functionality of the station and provide better facilities for personnel.

The planning statement says the proposed extension would create additional space within the appliance bay as well as providing a separate kit-changing area.

It adds that the refurbishment and realignment of the building would help provide a "more efficient response to emergency incidents", while introducing separate welfare and shower facilities which the existing station currently lacks.

Mechanical and electrical systems within the station are also expected to be upgraded, with the improvements designed to make the building more energy efficient and support current carbon-reduction targets.

The fire station remains an operational emergency services facility and the proposals do not involve a change of use. Planning documents describe the scheme as continued investment in essential emergency service infrastructure.

According to the supporting planning statement, the refurbishment and extension are intended to improve the station's functionality, operational efficiency and accommodation standards for staff and emergency response services.

The proposed extension has been designed to remain subordinate to the existing building, with consideration given to its scale, massing, materials and architectural character.

Planning documents state that the works are not expected to result in unacceptable additional impacts on neighbouring properties through overlooking, overshadowing, noise or disturbance beyond those associated with the site's established use as a fire station.

The application will now be considered through the planning process.
