Plans Lodged For New Commemorative Features At Garvagh Memorial

Plans have been submitted to install two new commemorative features beside the Garvagh War Memorial in County Londonderry.

The proposals, submitted by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, include a new plaque dedicated to the Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR), to be fixed to an existing stone wall above a bench near the memorial.

Design drawings show the plaque would be made from dark grey South African granite, with traditional serif lettering. It would feature the UDR crest alongside the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross.

A separate memorial plinth is also proposed in remembrance of Corporal John Conley of the Ulster Defence Regiment, who was killed in a bombing in Garvagh in July 1974 while assisting others.

The granite pillar would be positioned close to, but physically separate from, the existing war memorial. The inscription is to be agreed in consultation with Corporal Conley’s family and will include wording describing him as a devoted husband and father of three.

Planning documents state that both commemorative features have been designed to complement the existing listed structure without altering its fabric. The council says the proposals are intended to enhance the commemorative setting of the site while preserving the prominence of the Garvagh War Memorial within the town centre.

Commenting on the application, Councillor Richard Holmes said: “The submission of plans for the commemorative features to remember the Garvagh bomb and the sacrifice of Corporal John Conley is to be welcomed.

“There are those in this world who run towards danger whilst the rest of us flee. Corporal John Conley was one of the brave security forces who ran to danger in order to save others.

“Without men and women like John Conley, The Troubles would have wreaked an even greater death toll.

“The eventual erection of these plinths will allow the community to remember and reflect on the tragic loss and welcome the peace we now enjoy.”
