Councillors have approved plans to redevelop a Cushendall hotel that has been closed for around eight years.

Councillors have approved plans to redevelop the former Glens Hotel on Coast Road, which has been closed for around eight years, and extend it to provide 38 bedrooms, a restaurant, public bar, function room and gym.

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Planning Committee approved the proposals on Wednesday, 28 October.

The scheme, brought forward by Z Property Development and GMR Architects, will increase the hotel’s accommodation from 16 bedrooms to 38, with 19 guest suites on each of the first and second floors.

The main frontage will be retained and refurbished, while substantial sections of the rear and side extensions will be demolished and replaced. These include former kitchens, function spaces, storage areas and parts of the roof.

The approved plans include separate entrances from Coast Road for the public bar and restaurant, a redesigned hotel entrance and reception, and communal areas.

The lower ground floor will include a gym and additional guest facilities, with outdoor terraces at the front and rear.

Proposed materials include natural slate roofing, timber sash windows and smooth rendered walls.

Planning officers concluded that the redevelopment would improve the site's appearance while respecting the character of the Cushendall Conservation Area and nearby listed buildings.

The hotel has been closed since approximately 2018.
