A new car park is set to be built at DH Christie Memorial Primary School in Coleraine, after Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council granted planning permission for the development.

The project, located at 45 Ballycairn Road, will see the creation of a 36-space parking area, designed to ease congestion and improve safety for pupils, staff and visitors. Two of the spaces will be allocated for disabled users, and a dedicated drop-off zone will also be included to support smoother school drop-offs and pick-ups.

Plans also include a new access point to the site, alongside a programme of hard and soft landscaping aimed at enhancing the school’s frontage and overall appearance.

Importantly, the existing low boundary wall along Ballycairn Road will remain in place. It will, however, be complemented by a new fence — an ‘IBEX’-type security structure — which complies with Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) guidance under the Secured by Design initiative. The scheme promotes crime prevention through careful and considered environmental design.

The development is expected to address long-standing parking pressures around the school, while improving both safety and accessibility for the local community.
