Bushmills - Geoffrey Moffett

A planning application has been submitted to Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council seeking permission to convert a long-vacant shop on Main Street, Bushmills, into a one-bedroom apartment.

The proposal, lodged by applicant Simon Clark with Montgomery Irwin Architects acting as agent, relates to 142a Main Street — a property that has been empty for more than five years. The scheme involves changing the use of the ground floor from retail to residential, with no alterations proposed to the building’s exterior.

According to the planning statement, the move aims to make “sustainable use of a vacant unit” while preserving the character of Bushmills’ historic town centre. The application notes that the shop has proven “no longer commercially viable,” and that bringing it back into active use will “support town centre vitality” and contribute modestly to local housing supply.

The existing shopfront and façade will be retained, in keeping with conservation guidance for the village. Access to the apartment will remain via Main Street, with parking to be provided through existing on-street spaces.
