With just over two months to go, plans for Armed Forces Day 2026 continue to take shape, with organisers preparing for what is expected to be one of the largest events ever staged in Coleraine.

The event is set to take place on Saturday, 20 June, with more than 20,000 people expected to attend throughout the day, bringing a significant boost to the town and the wider Causeway Coast and Glens area. Early indications suggest the programme will run from around 10am through to approximately 5pm, offering a full day of activity for visitors.

Preparations have been ongoing for several months, involving close coordination between council officials, the Ministry of Defence, and a range of partner agencies. Planning has now reached an advanced stage, with key elements of the day beginning to fall into place.

Similar to 2018, a central feature will be a large-scale parade through Coleraine town centre, forming the backbone of the day’s ceremonial programme. This will be supported by a series of military displays, exhibitions and performances located across key areas including Christie Park, the town centre, and spaces along the River Bann.

Among the ceremonial highlights expected on the day is a gun salute, alongside the presence of the Band of the Royal Irish, bringing a strong military tradition and atmosphere to proceedings. Visitors can also expect a full programme of live music, entertainment and family-friendly activity throughout the afternoon.

Organisers are also working to deliver a strong visual spectacle, with a number of aerial elements now forming part of the developing programme. The RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team have already been confirmed and are set to take to the skies in what is expected to be one of the standout moments of the day.

Aviation calendar listings also indicate that the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight could feature later in the afternoon, although this element remains subject to final confirmation.

Beyond the formal programme, there will be a wider focus on creating a festival atmosphere throughout the town. Hospitality businesses, retailers and tourism providers are expected to play a key role, with the event seen as an opportunity to showcase the area to a large regional audience.

Extensive planning is also underway behind the scenes to manage transport, safety and visitor flow, with park-and-ride options, traffic management measures and multi-agency coordination forming a critical part of the preparations.

Armed Forces Day is held annually across the UK to recognise the contribution of serving personnel, veterans and cadets. Hosting the 2026 event is seen as a significant moment for the borough, both in terms of honouring the Armed Forces and delivering a major visitor event.

It is expected that the Council will release the full itinerary for the day towards the end of this month or in the first week of May, providing a clearer picture of timings and confirmed attractions.

With momentum building and final details continuing to be refined, the direction of travel is clear, a large-scale, family-friendly day that places Coleraine firmly in the spotlight.

Similar to 2018, it is expected that Coleraine town centre will be closed to traffic from early morning, with additional security measures in place throughout the day. These are likely to include concealed bins and a strong police presence, as part of wider plans to ensure the safety and smooth running of the event.
