A long-disused retail unit in Coleraine is set for a significant transformation after planners today (31st July 2025) approved proposals to convert the former JJB Sports store at 52 Hanover Place into a state-of-the-art indoor padel centre.

The development, led by Powerhouse Padel Ltd, promises to breathe new life into a site that has stood vacant for several years. Planning permission was granted for the change of use, alongside approval for new retail signage—including an illuminated main gantry sign, gable signage, and window vinyl graphics.

The project had first come to light in April, when we (Explore Causeway Coast & Glens) exclusively revealed Powerhouse Padel Ltd’s ambitious proposals.

Today’s approval confirms the plans and sets the stage for a new chapter in the town’s sporting and recreational offerings.

The new facility is expected to be more than just a sports venue. In addition to multiple indoor padel courts, the centre will support a range of recreational and fitness activities tailored for people of all ages and abilities. From casual games and competitive tournaments to fitness classes, the venue aims to cater to the full spectrum of the community—children, young adults, and older generations alike.

Accessibility is a key component of the design. The venue will include wheelchair-accessible courts, changing facilities, and transport access, ensuring inclusivity for individuals with disabilities.

Further enhancing its appeal, the facility will also feature a café, social spaces, and spectator seating, creating a hub not only for sports but also for community interaction and events. High-quality lighting will support competitive matches and enhance the viewing experience.

Padel—a fast-growing racquet sport combining elements of tennis and squash—has surged in popularity in recent years, with more than 30 million players globally. Played on a smaller enclosed court, the game is typically played in doubles, with solid racquets and underarm serves. The ball remains in play as it rebounds off the glass walls, adding pace and unpredictability to the sport.

Among its most famous fans are football star David Beckham, tennis great Serena Williams, and French President Emmanuel Macron, all of whom have contributed to the sport’s growing profile.

With today’s green light from planners, Powerhouse Padel Ltd is expected to move ahead with redevelopment works in the coming months—potentially delivering a significant boost to Coleraine’s town centre and providing a welcome new use for one of its long-vacant buildings.
