A notice of motion has been submitted to Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council seeking formal recognition for football legend Martin O’Neill and his contribution to the sport.

The motion, brought forward by Councillor Bateson and seconded by Councillor Peacock, calls on the council to recognise and celebrate the achievements of the Kilrea native, whose career in football has spanned decades at both playing and managerial level.

The proposal highlights O’Neill’s success as a player, including winning two European Cups with Nottingham Forest and captaining Northern Ireland during the 1982 FIFA World Cup.

It also references his managerial achievements with clubs including Leicester City, Celtic F.C. and Aston Villa F.C..

Councillors noted what they described as O’Neill’s “enduring leadership and contribution to the game”, referencing his recent return to management with Celtic and the achievement of securing a league title at the age of 74.

Under the terms of the motion, council officers would be asked to explore appropriate ways to formally recognise his legacy within the borough.

Suggestions outlined within the notice include the installation of a commemorative plaque or civic recognition in Kilrea, as well as the possible awarding of the Freedom of the Borough.

The motion also proposes engagement with local stakeholders, sporting organisations and the O’Neill family as part of the process.

The notice of motion is expected to come before councillors for consideration at a future meeting of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council.
