Listed Building Consent Approved For Coleraine Town Hall Stained-glass Window

Plans for a new stained-glass window at Coleraine Town Hall have been approved.

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Planning Committee granted Listed Building Consent for the proposal at its meeting on Wednesday morning.

The application relates to the Grade B1-listed Town Hall at The Diamond and will see an existing clear-glass window replaced with a commemorative stained-glass design.

The window, on the building's eastern elevation, is intended to mark the Centenary of Northern Ireland.

According to planning documents, the existing window is approximately 3.9m high and 1.7m wide. Its existing timber frame will be retained, with the clear glass replaced by handmade coloured and textured glass assembled within lead canes.

The proposed design, shown in the plans submitted with the application, incorporates a series of images and symbols within the stained glass.

Planning officers said the work would not have an unacceptable impact on the character of the listed building or surrounding area.

The Historic Environment Division (HED) was consulted during the application process and confirmed it was content with the proposal. No third-party objections were received.

In their assessment, officers said the original window frame would be retained "as much as is possible" and considered the use of traditional materials and techniques to be in keeping with the historic building.

They concluded the replacement window would not detract from the character of the Town Hall and could add a point of interest within the town centre.

The committee recommended approval ahead of Wednesday's meeting, and granted Listed Building Consent this morning.
