Lifeguard Parking Concessions Proposed For Causeway Coast And Glens
Oct 28, 2026
A proposal to explore free or concessionary parking for lifeguards has been submitted to Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council.
Councillor Jonathan McAuley proposed the notice of motion, seconded by Councillor Allister Kyle, which is due to be debated at the relevant council committee meeting in November.
It asks the council to examine parking concessions for qualified, on-duty lifeguards working at designated beaches, swimming areas and other aquatic facilities.
Free parking during scheduled working hours is among the options councillors are being asked to consider.
The motion recognises lifeguards' contribution to public safety by preventing drownings and responding to emergencies.
It also highlights the long hours, seasonal shifts, weekends, and public holidays they can work, arguing that parking charges may add a financial burden for those travelling to their posts.
Under the proposal, the council would engage with lifeguard employers and service providers, including the RNLI and other recognised organisations, to establish who would qualify and how eligibility could be verified.
An assessment would also examine the financial and operational implications, including any effect on council parking income, the availability of spaces and enforcement arrangements.
The motion requests a report setting out the available options, anticipated costs and practical arrangements for a concessionary parking scheme.
It argues that reasonable parking concessions would recognise lifeguards’ public service, help recruit and retain seasonal staff and support the continued provision of water safety services.
