A Coleraine-based creative business is stepping forward with a fresh digital presence, as Iris Photography NI officially launches its new website, designed to better reflect its unique offering and growing demand.

Behind Iris Photography NI is Brian McKeown, an experienced optometrist who has combined his clinical expertise with a creative eye to deliver something truly distinctive in Northern Ireland.

Brian, who has worked in optometry for over 20 years, first discovered iris photography while on holiday in France. Captivated by the intricate patterns and colours within the human eye, he set out to master the craft himself. What followed was six months of dedicated learning, refining both macro photography techniques and advanced image editing skills.

“I was really drawn to the idea that the iris is as unique as a fingerprint,” he said. “The colours, textures, and patterns are incredible. It's like looking into an entirely different world.”

Operating from John Laverty Optometrists, Iris Photography NI is based at 1 Abbey Street, Coleraine BT52 1DS, placing the service right in the heart of the town centre.

From this location, Brian has turned his fascination into a fully-fledged offering, allowing people to see their eyes transformed into striking, high-resolution works of art.

The process itself is quick and painless, involving the careful magnification of the iris to reveal its natural complexity. While capturing the image is straightforward, the real craftsmanship lies in the editing. Each photograph is meticulously refined, with reflections, eyelashes, and imperfections removed to produce a flawless final piece.

“The level of detail you can see up close is mind-blowing,” Brian added. “People are always amazed when they see the raw image. It’s like they’re seeing their eyes for the first time.”

Since its launch, the service has already attracted attention not just locally but from right across Northern Ireland, with customers travelling to Coleraine to experience the unique offering. Families, couples, and even businesses have shown interest, with some exploring the idea of creating collaborative pieces or using the experience for team-building.

“I think it’s a fun and meaningful way to engage people,” Brian explained. “The question ‘Which iris belongs to you?’ can spark a lot of conversation.”

For Brian, it’s a natural extension of the work he has dedicated his career to.

 “I’m passionate about eyes, and this just felt like a natural next step. I’m really grateful for the support so far and excited to see where it goes.”
