Inclusive Recreation Area For Young Adults Proposed For Borough
Oct 28, 2026
A proposal to explore a dedicated play and recreation area for young adults with additional needs has been submitted to Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council.
Councillor Ciarán McQuillan proposed the motion, seconded by Councillor Leanne Peacock, and it is due to be debated at the relevant council committee meeting in November.
It asks the council to examine the feasibility of creating a safe, accessible and welcoming space where young adults with additional needs can socialise, take part in activities and spend time outdoors.
The motion recognises the importance of inclusive recreational and social opportunities and highlights the barriers many young adults face in accessing suitable facilities.
Under the proposal, the council would engage directly with young adults with additional needs, their families and carers to understand their experiences and identify gaps in existing provision.
That engagement would help ensure any proposed facility reflects the needs of those who would use it.
The motion also calls for partnership working with community and voluntary organisations, including Compass Advocacy Network and other groups supporting people with additional needs.
Their involvement would help inform proposals and identify opportunities for collaboration.
They would also investigate potential funding sources and partnership arrangements, considering the development, operation, and long-term sustainability of a facility.
