From Accountant To Coastal Entrepreneur: The Inspiring Story Behind Portrush By The Sea
Jan 26, 2026
Today, we're shining a spotlight on one local entrepreneur whose journey from corporate life to property restoration has not only transformed historic buildings but also created unforgettable holiday experiences for thousands.
Meet Peter Diamond, the driving force behind Portrush by the Sea self-catering accommodations – a story of resilience, passion, and a deep love for this vibrant coastal town.
Peter's path began in the world of finance. Qualifying as a chartered accountant in 2009, he soon realised the structured office life wasn't his calling. After a period of travel that broadened his horizons, he returned home and dove headfirst into property renovation in Portrush – right as the global property crash hit.
It was a baptism by fire: steep learning curves, financial stresses, and long hours. Yet, Peter persevered, turning neglected houses into welcoming homes.
"Surviving that era taught me everything about grit and adaptability," he reflects.
Living with a speech impediment, Peter found that self-employment offered the autonomy and responsibility he craved.
"It's not for everyone – and it's getting tougher these days," he admits candidly.
But for him, it's been a perfect fit, allowing him to immerse himself in the North Coast's beauty every day.
Portrush holds a special place in his heart, evoking cherished childhood memories of sandy beaches and salty air.
"The work is intense, but if you love the old buildings and the town, it all clicks," he says.
Life threw a major curveball in 2019, shortly after the birth of his second child. Peter was diagnosed with a complex brain aneurysm – a shocking revelation for him and his wife. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, international surgeons couldn't travel to Northern Ireland, delaying the procedure.
In 2020, he placed his trust in the exceptional team at Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital. The high-risk operation was a success, and waking up to good news was a profound relief.
This experience prompted a pivot: shifting from long-term rentals to holiday lets. Encouraged by the tourism board during the staycation boom, Peter saw it as a way to reduce family burdens while sharing his passion for Portrush.
Today, Portrush by the Sea offers 31 beautifully renovated, 3-star graded apartments in prime locations across the town – from Seaview havens to harbour retreats. Last year alone, the business welcomed over 2,000 reservations, supported by an outstanding team committed to delivering warm, memorable stays.
These beautifully restored apartments offer the perfect base for exploring the Causeway Coast – from the Giant’s Causeway's dramatic cliffs to Portrush's lively harbour and golden strands. The town buzzes as a summer resort, with festivals, golf courses, and seaside strolls drawing families, couples, and adventurers alike.
Peter is thrilled by Portrush's renaissance over the past 18 years.
"It's returning to its glory days as a premier destination," he enthuses.
And with Portrush by the Sea, visitors get more than just a place to stay – they get a slice of authentic coastal living, curated by someone who's poured his heart into every brick and beam.
