Date Confirmed For Northern Ireland Prison Service Freedom Of The Borough Event
May 28, 2026
Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has confirmed that the Northern Ireland Prison Service will be awarded the Freedom of the Borough on Friday, 28 August 2026.
The honour was previously discussed at a meeting of the Commemoration & Celebration Sub Committee on 5 November 2025, when councillors agreed that a Special Council Meeting should be arranged to consider Freedom of the Borough proposals for both Hannah Scott and the Northern Ireland Prison Service.
Council officials have now confirmed a date for the Northern Ireland Prison Service ceremony, with preparations for the event already progressing.
An initial planning meeting took place in May at Roe Valley Arts Centre and was reported to have progressed successfully. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for June as planning continues.
The event will include a parade, while an exhibition highlighting the work and history of the Northern Ireland Prison Service is also planned to coincide with the occasion.
Councillors have been advised that they will continue to receive updates as arrangements develop in the lead-up to the ceremony.
The Freedom of the Borough is one of the highest civic honours a council can bestow and is awarded in recognition of exceptional service and contribution.
