Limavady Bid For UK Town of Culture 2028

A notice of motion has been tabled calling on council officers to develop a potential submission to the UK Town of Culture 2028 competition on behalf of Limavady.

The motion, proposed by Alderman Callan and seconded by Councillor Elder, asks that officers explore and prepare a comprehensive Expression of Interest, with the aim of positioning the town as a strong candidate for the national title.

Earlier this month, the UK Government launched the UK Town of Culture competition for the first time, as part of wider plans aimed at supporting cultural regeneration in towns across the country.

The competition is open to small, medium and large towns, with the successful places expected to deliver a wide-ranging cultural programme showcasing local identity, creativity and community participation. Proposals are expected to include arts venues, performances, workshops and community-led projects.

Expressions of Interest are now open and will be assessed by an expert panel led by Sir Phil Redmond. Judges will consider how towns plan to tell their unique story, involve their communities and deliver a clear cultural vision.

The strongest submissions will progress to a shortlist, with each shortlisted town receiving £60,000 to support the development of a full bid. Three finalists will then be selected, one small, one medium and one large town.

The overall winner will be named UK Town of Culture 2028 and will receive £3 million, while the two runners-up will each receive £250,000 to deliver elements of their proposals.

The deadline for Expressions of Interest is 31 March 2026, with the shortlist expected to be announced later in the spring.
