Joey Dunlop Exhibition

A proposal to establish a permanent exhibition in honour of motorcycling legend Joey Dunlop has received backing from councillors at the Leisure and Development Committee.

The notice of motion, tabled by Alderman John McAuley and seconded by Councillor Mervyn Storey, was supported during Monday evening’s meeting. It comes in the wake of the Joey Dunlop 25 Celebration earlier this year, which drew thousands of fans from across the globe to Ballymoney.

Councillor Tanya Elder told the committee:

"I speak in full support of this motion. The recent Joey Dunlop 25th celebration demonstrated not only the enduring love and respect held for Joey Dunlop OBE, MBE, but also the unique place he holds in the hearts of people here in Ballymoney, across Northern Ireland, and indeed throughout the world.

"Thousands of people came to our town to remember a man whose sporting achievements and quiet humility made him a legend both on and off the track. Joey was not only one of the greatest motorcycle racers in history, but also a citizen and Freeman of the Borough. His dedication, generosity, and humanity have left a legacy that transcends sport.

"It is right and fitting, therefore, that we as a council explore, in partnership with the Dunlop family, the creation of a permanent exhibition of memorabilia. Such an exhibition would not only preserve and celebrate Joey’s life and achievements but also serve as an inspiration for generations to come, attracting visitors from far and wide to our area.

"This is about honouring a man we are rightly proud of — someone whose name and legacy will forever be synonymous with Ballymoney.

"I commend the motion to the chamber and encourage the full support of all members."

Joey Dunlop, a five-time world champion and 26-time Isle of Man TT winner, was awarded both the OBE and MBE for his achievements on and off the track. Remembered not only as one of motorcycling’s greatest riders but also for his humanitarian work, he remains one of Ballymoney’s most celebrated sons and holds the title of Freeman of the Borough.

If approved at full council, the exhibition would serve as a lasting tribute to Dunlop’s enduring legacy and international impact on the sport.
