A request for clarification on council policy relating to employees who also serve within the emergency services is due to be raised at this week’s Corporate Policy and Resources Committee.

The matter will be brought forward by Councillor Darryl Wilson under any other relevant business.

The request centres on how the council supports staff who volunteer or serve in roles such as the fire service, ambulance service, or other emergency response organisations.

Councillor Wilson has asked officers to outline what provisions currently exist for employees who may need to leave their council duties at short notice in order to respond to an emergency call.

Clarification is also being sought on how such circumstances are treated in terms of pay and leave, and whether staff are permitted to make up any time lost while attending an incident.

In addition, questions have been raised around practical scenarios, including whether a member of staff who is driving a council vehicle at the time of being called to an emergency may use that vehicle to travel directly to their relevant emergency service depot.

It is understood the request is intended to provide members with a clearer understanding of the council’s current approach and any existing supports in place.

In bringing the matter forward, Councillor Wilson also placed on record his appreciation for those who serve or volunteer within the emergency services.

He said their dedication plays a crucial role in protecting communities and responding to incidents, and that councils should ensure no unnecessary barriers are placed in the way of staff carrying out what is often life-saving work.

The discussion is expected to offer further insight into how the council recognises and facilitates that dual role, while maintaining its operational responsibilities.
