Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council is being urged to review its use of traditional fireworks at public events, following concerns about their impact on animals, vulnerable residents and the wider community.

The call comes as the issue appears as part of correspondence due to be considered by the Council’s Leisure and Development Committee next week.

In a letter sent to the Council’s Chief Executive, MLA Jon Burrows asked for a full reconsideration of current practices and encouraged the adoption of alternatives such as low-noise fireworks or drone displays. He explained that although fireworks remain popular, they can cause significant distress to pets, livestock, wildlife and individuals who are sensitive to loud noise. This issue has been raised more frequently by residents and animal welfare organisations.

Burrows noted that other councils across the UK have already begun exploring quieter or more innovative forms of celebration. He described these approaches as more inclusive and capable of delivering visually impressive displays. He suggested that Causeway Coast and Glens could lead by example by prioritising celebrations that everyone can enjoy without causing unnecessary anxiety.

The MLA asked the Council to provide an update on whether these alternatives might be incorporated into future events.
