Council To Consider Motion On Borough-Wide EV Charging Infrastructure Review
Jul 30, 2025
A new Notice of Motion aimed at boosting electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure across the Borough will go before the full council next week, before moving on to the relevant committee for further consideration.
Proposed by Alderman Stewart and seconded by Councillor Kane, the motion calls for a comprehensive assessment of the Borough’s current and future needs for EV charging points. The proposed review comes in response to the rising number of residents purchasing or considering electric vehicles, as well as the growing demand from tourists who may hire EVs during their stay.
The motion highlights several key areas for consideration, including the potential installation of charging points at council-owned facilities such as leisure centres, community halls, Cloonavin, and Riada House. It also proposes a review of the infrastructure required to support the Council’s own transition to a zero-emission vehicle fleet, particularly at depot sites.
Additionally, the motion addresses the need for charging availability in car parks, covering both short- and long-stay options, and locations near popular tourist attractions. The overarching goal is to ensure the Borough is well-equipped to meet future EV demand while aligning with national environmental and net-zero targets.
If approved, the review could lay the groundwork for a more sustainable transport strategy throughout the region.
