A proposal to raise awareness of endometriosis and polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) has been submitted to Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council.

The notice of motion, proposed by Councillor Amy Mairs and seconded by Councillor Lee Kane, is due to be debated at the relevant council committee meeting in November.

It calls on the council to recognise the impact both conditions can have on women and girls across the borough and take steps to improve public understanding.

PMOS is the new name for the condition previously known as polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS.

Under the proposal, the council would recognise March as Endometriosis Awareness Month and September as PMOS Awareness Month each year, marking both by illuminating appropriate civic buildings.

The council would also share trusted, accessible information through its communication channels and display it in leisure centres, civic buildings, and other suitable council facilities.

The motion also proposes information and awareness sessions, organised in liaison with the Western and Northern Health and Social Care Trusts.

These would aim to improve understanding of both conditions and direct women and girls towards appropriate information and support.
