Council Signs Off On Motorcycle Purchase For Proposed Joey Dunlop Museum
Feb 04, 2026
Councillors last night ratified a recommendation to purchase a Honda 125cc motorcycle for inclusion in a proposed permanent Joey Dunlop Museum.
The proposal, which had been brought forward by the council’s Leisure and Development Committee, also supports council officers seeking the opportunity to purchase a second motorcycle, subject to a ceiling value informed by an independent valuation.
The Head of Community and Culture previously told members the proposal was time-sensitive and central to the long-term success of the planned museum. It was explained that the Honda 125cc was significant not only because of its connection to Joey Dunlop, but because it highlighted his abilities beyond racing, demonstrating his skills as a mechanic and engineer while supporting his brother. Members were also advised that a 250cc motorcycle under consideration was ridden by Dunlop himself.
Alderman McAuley described the proposal as a major opportunity, referencing the recent success of the Joey 2025 event, which was named Irish Motorcycle Event of the Year. He praised the council team involved and said a museum without a motorcycle would be “pointless”.
Alderman Callan concurred, pointing to the evident public appetite for Joey Dunlop memorabilia and the significant contribution of the Dunlop family to motor racing across the borough.
Councillor Kennedy said the proposal would benefit both the town and the wider borough, highlighting the cultural and tourism potential of a permanent museum.
The recommendation was proposed by Alderman McAuley, seconded by Alderman Callan, and formally ratified by members at full council last night.
