Council Files UK Trademark Application For 'Causeway Coast And Glens Borough Council' Logo
Jan 13, 2026
Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has applied to trademark its logo with the UK Intellectual Property Office, covering four separate classes of services.
The application is for a figurative mark rather than a word mark. This means it protects the specific visual design of the council’s branding, not the words “Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council” themselves.
Geographic names are generally difficult to trademark because they describe a place rather than a single organisation. Terms such as “Causeway Coast” or “Glens” can be used by many businesses and groups in the area, making exclusive ownership of the wording alone unlikely. A logo, however, can be protected because it is a distinctive graphic created by the council.
The trademark covers local area networks and their operation, as well as a wide range of advertising and public information services. These include campaigns to promote shopping locally, public works, social welfare, environmental issues and community initiatives, alongside business and financial management services linked to running a local authority.
In response to a press query, a council spokesperson said: “As part of Council's continued measures to improve cyber security, trademarking of the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council logo has been reviewed and updated accordingly.”
The application has now been published by the Intellectual Property Office, opening a formal opposition period during which third parties can object. If no challenges are upheld, the trademark is expected to be registered in the coming weeks, giving the council legal protection over how its logo is used across its digital platforms and public-facing campaigns.
