A council committee has agreed to begin the process of selling off Coleraine Marina, with Coleraine Harbour Commissioners expected to be among the interested parties.

The marina, located on the River Bann beside Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Cloonavin headquarters, was the subject of an economic appraisal carried out in 2023.

That report, prepared by external consultants, concluded with a recommendation to dispose of the asset.

Despite the recommendation, no immediate action followed.

However, at a behind-closed-doors meeting of the council’s Environmental Services Committee last month, councillors were told the issue had become increasingly urgent for Coleraine Harbour Commissioners due to wider redevelopment ambitions linked to the riverfront.

Committee members agreed to declare the marina surplus to council requirements and to begin the process of asset realisation.

According to the committee minutes, Alliance councillor Lee Kane referenced a recent deputation from Coleraine Harbour Commissioners during discussions on the future of the marina.

“Councillor Kane referred to the deputation from the Coleraine Harbours Commissioner which set out their vision around delivery of the Masterplan and Riverside redevelopment and said the key which unlocks this potential hinges on the marina.”

Coleraine Harbour Commissioners are understood to be among the interested parties as part of their wider vision for a riverfront masterplan and redevelopment project along the River Bann.

No details have yet been released publicly regarding the potential value of the marina or the timeframe for any future sale process.
