Pre-consultation has begun on the future of Limavady Courthouse as part of a wider review of the Northern Ireland Courts and Tribunals Service (NICTS) estate.

The Department of Justice has confirmed that no decision has yet been made regarding the building's future. However, consultation activity is now underway to help inform a final decision by the Justice Minister.

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice said pre-consultation engagement with key stakeholders began on 16 February 2026 and will continue until 3 April 2026.

This initial phase will be followed by a full 12-week public consultation, which is expected to take place in summer 2026.

The process forms part of the ongoing implementation of the NICTS Estate Strategy, which is reviewing how court buildings across Northern Ireland are used and maintained.

Officials said feedback gathered during the pre-consultation phase, alongside responses from the public consultation, will be used to help develop a draft policy on the future of Limavady Courthouse.

The Department of Justice said the draft policy will also be assessed to understand its potential impact. Any proposals emerging from the consultation process will be subject to both Equality Impact Assessments and Rural Needs Impact Assessments.

The department has said that anyone with an interest in the future of Limavady Courthouse will be encouraged to take part in the consultation process and share their views once the public consultation opens later this year.
