Closed-Door Talks Set for Future of Portrush Waterworld Site
May 03, 2026
The future of the former Waterworld site in Portrush is due to be discussed by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council this week, with the matter set to be considered behind closed doors.
The item will go before the Land and Property and Strategic Asset Subcommittee, where elected members are expected to review potential next steps for the Harbour Road site, which has remained vacant for several years.
Under local government procedures, certain matters can be discussed in committee when they involve commercially sensitive or legally complex considerations.
Explore Causeway Coast & Glens understands that the site is believed to hold significant value, given its coastal location and development potential, with estimates suggesting it could be in the region of £1.3 million to £1.4 million.
A range of options is also expected to be presented to councillors. These may include selling the site in its current condition, partially demolishing the structure, fully demolishing it prior to any sale, or retaining the building for potential future use.
The site has also experienced a number of recent break-ins, including one reported last month. In response to a press query, a Council spokesperson said:
“Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council can confirm that it is aware of reports of a break-in at the vacant Waterworld building in Portrush on Thursday, 16 April. The matter is currently subject to an ongoing police investigation, and the Council is unable to comment further.”
