The Causeway Shantymen

There’s something about a sea shanty that brings people together. Maybe it’s the rhythm, maybe it’s the storytelling, or maybe it’s that shared sense of pulling in the same direction. That spirit was front and centre at last week’s AGM for The Causeway Shantymen, a night that mixed reflection, laughter, and a clear sense of momentum heading into the year ahead.

From the outset, it was clear this wasn’t going to be your typical AGM. The evening was lifted by guest speaker and fellow shantyman John Logan, who brought the room to life with stories from his time aboard the currach Colmcille. His tales carried more than just adventure. They came with a message that landed well with the crew.

“We all pull together or we go nowhere.”

Simple, honest, and exactly what the group stands for. Add in a firm stance on keeping things positive, with no room for put-downs, and it set the tone for the kind of culture the Shantymen continue to build.

There was also a glimpse into what’s coming next. Members were given a preview of the group’s latest video and studio recordings. While there are still a few finishing touches to be added, the early signs are promising. The sound, the energy, the feel of it all. It’s lining up to be something worth watching and listening out for in the months ahead.

Looking back on the past year, the Chair reflected on what has been a strong period for the group. Growth wasn’t just measured in numbers, but in confidence, performance quality, and visibility. On stage and off it, the Shantymen have continued to find their voice and build their presence, with plenty of credit given to the effort and support of the full crew.

With the formal side of the evening wrapped up, attention turned to the future. A new committee has been appointed to help steer the next chapter:

  • Chair – Chris Millar
  • Secretary – Patrick Steele
  • Treasurer – David Paul

Alongside the new committee, there’s strong continuity in key roles. Garth Anderson remains as Engagement Officer, while Chris Millar continues in his role as Musical Director, helping to shape the group’s sound and keep performances tight, polished and full of character.

It’s a fresh structure with the same shared purpose. Keep the standards high, keep the momentum going, and keep the music at the heart of it all.

If the mood in the room was anything to go by, the year ahead won’t be a quiet one. There’s a sense that the Causeway Shantymen are building something that goes beyond performances. It’s about community, connection, and keeping a proud maritime tradition alive in a way that feels relevant today.

Onwards and upwards. Plenty more singing to come.
