Causeway Coast And Glens Submits Plans For Mobile Beach Saunas At Benone, Portrush And Waterfoot
Jun 17, 2026
Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has formally submitted a series of planning applications seeking permission to introduce mobile saunas at several popular coastal locations, including Benone Strand, East Strand and White Rocks in Portrush, and Waterfoot Beach in County Antrim.
The latest applications follow discussions held by councillors in 2025 amid growing interest in wellness tourism and cold-water swimming, with a report at the time highlighting increasing demand for beachside sauna facilities.
The proposals would see temporary trailer or van-based saunas positioned at carefully selected sites, including land near Benone Caravan Park in Limavady, East Strand and White Rocks in Portrush, and Waterfoot Beach. Planning documents state that the units would be fully mobile, removed from site at the end of each operating day and would not require permanent foundations, water connections or sewage infrastructure.
Supporting statements submitted with the applications say the facilities would help address a lack of dedicated wellness infrastructure, encourage visitors to stay longer, support local tourism businesses, and promote physical and mental well-being. The council also argues that the modest scale and temporary nature of the saunas would minimise impacts on sensitive coastal landscapes and protected environmental sites.
