Planning permission has been granted for the refurbishment and extension of Garvagh Public Library on Bridge Street.

The approved scheme allows Libraries NI to carry out works to the existing single-storey building, which will continue to operate as a public library.

The project includes a full internal reconfiguration of the current layout, along with a modest extension to provide improved staff facilities, plant space and enhanced accessibility.

Externally, the building will undergo a comprehensive upgrade, including new façade treatments, replacement windows and doors, and a new roof. Associated site works are also included as part of the approved development.

According to the planning statement prepared by Collins Rolston Architects, the refurbishment is designed to achieve EnerPHit retrofit standards, significantly improving the building’s energy efficiency and reducing operational carbon emissions.

The site, which lies within Garvagh’s settlement limits and is adjacent to an existing graveyard, will remain in the same use. The approved works will not impact the graveyard.

Councillor Richard Holmes said the approval was a welcome investment in a key community facility and highlighted the important role Garvagh Library plays for residents of all ages.
