Portrush Park Run

This Saturday, 19th April, Portrush parkrun is set to celebrate a truly remarkable milestone – its 600th event – and the team is aiming to mark the occasion by welcoming 600 runners and walkers to the beach.

Taking place on the breathtaking East Strand, Portrush is no ordinary parkrun. It made history as the first 5k parkrun in the world to take place entirely on sand. Since its launch in 2012, more than 16,000 participants have taken on the sandy course, supported by over 700 volunteers – with some traveling from as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, and Canada to tick it off their parkrun bucket list. While the early events often drew fewer than 50 attendees, Portrush now regularly attracts 300 to 400 enthusiastic parkrunners, with countless friendships forged over a post-run coffee along the coast.

Event Director Mervyn Thompson, who was recently awarded the BEM for his outstanding contribution to parkrun, reflects on what makes Portrush so unique:

“Our location is undoubtedly what brings many runners to our event. As time has progressed, there are a number of seaside resorts that are home to parkrun events. That being said, there are still only a few that are run entirely on sand, and Portrush can claim to be the first in the world. A lot of people don't really like running on sand, but it doesn't stop them from coming to experience the sensation of hearing the waves gently lap towards your feet as you run. It's not picture postcard every week, but if you keep an eye on the forecast and the tide times, you can definitely have a morning to remember.”

And while the beach can sometimes mean wet feet, the outlook for this weekend is promising! With early rain clearing and firm sand underfoot, conditions are looking close to perfect for a record-breaking turnout.

Start time is 9:30am, and everyone is welcome – parkrun is free, inclusive, open to all ages and abilities, and welcomes both runners and walkers. There's even a dedicated parkwalker volunteer and a tailwalker at every event, so no one finishes last. Expect spot prizes and some tasty finish-line treats too!

With a big crowd expected, extra volunteers are needed to help make the magic happen. Whether it's scanning barcodes, timing finishers, or handing out tokens, your support will go a long way. To lend a hand, email [email protected].

So whether you lace up your trainers or fancy going barefoot – let’s help Portrush parkrun hit 600 for 600!
