Department For Infrastructure To Launch Dedicated Webpage For Kilrea Bridge Closure
Oct 08, 2025
The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) has announced plans to launch a dedicated webpage to keep residents and businesses informed about the ongoing Kilrea Bridge closure, following widespread criticism over poor communication since the emergency closure began on 20 September.
The bridge, which carries the B64 Bann Road over the River Bann, was closed in both directions after a safety inspection identified vertical and diagonal cracking on a retaining wall at the south-west end of the structure. The closure has had significant ramifications for communities on both sides of the river, affecting daily commutes, school runs, and local businesses.
Communication Breakdown
During a Road Service Update Meeting held on Tuesday evening, elected representatives voiced strong concerns about the lack of information being provided to the public since the closure began over two weeks ago. One councillor, speaking on behalf of constituents in the area, described the department's communication as "terrible, to be quite honest."
"Up until this point, there's been no communication with any business directly, and residents have had to rely on social media updates," the councillor stated. "Even the communication with elected representatives has not been good. The bridge closure itself was not communicated to elected representatives."
The sudden emergency closure left many in the community uncertain about the expected duration of disruption and the department's plans. School children have been particularly affected, with some now facing journeys of 29 minutes or more to reach their schools compared to what was previously a short trip across the bridge.
"It's actually cutting off people from their support networks and the surrounding area," the councillor explained. "There is not one single person who I've met since the day this was announced who has not raised this as a serious issue that's affected their life in one way or another."
Webpage to Provide Updates
In response to these concerns, DfI representatives confirmed that a dedicated webpage is being prepared specifically for the Kilrea Bridge situation. The page, which is expected to go live "in the next few days," will provide regular updates on the investigation, proposed solutions, and timelines for reopening.
"The department does intend to have a dedicated webpage just for local residents to update on Kilrea Bridge," a DfI spokesperson confirmed during the meeting. "That is being prepared at the minute. It hasn't been launched yet, but hopefully in the next few days that will go live, so you'll be able to get updates on that and get more information about what's happening."
The announcement was welcomed by councillors, who expressed hope that the webpage would be properly communicated to residents and businesses impacted by the closure.
