Rathlin Island is a celebrated landmark off the northern coast of County Antrim and a highlight along the Causeway Coastal Route. A short, six-mile ferry ride across the Sea of Moyle brings you to Rathlin Islandâan âLâ-shaped haven stretching six miles long and one mile wide, home to a steadily growing community of around 140 people.
Just a brief stroll from the harbour, you'll find the seasonal Boathouse Visitor Centre. Here, you can delve into the islandâs rich history, learn about modern island life, and view artefacts recovered from local shipwrecks. Enjoy one of the many scenic walks available, such as the coastal route to Mill Bay where you might catch sight of seals at play or basking in the sun. Alternatively, explore by hiring a bicycle or taking a leisurely bus ride around the island.
From April through July, the island becomes a prime spot for puffin watching, alongside a variety of other seabirds. The newly refurbished seabird centre opens its doors on May 29, offering not only bird-watching opportunities but also a tour of a working lighthouseânow part of the Great Lighthouses of Ireland tour.
Rathlin is steeped in legend, with one of its most famous tales recounting how, in 1306, Robert the Bruce found refuge here. Inspired by watching a spiderâs relentless effort to bridge a gap with its web, he later returned to Scotland to reclaim his crown.
The island also caters to a variety of needs with a selection of accommodations, a welcoming pub, a restaurant, and a community shop alongside a gift shop offering locally produced crafts. Art enthusiasts can visit âBreakwater Studioâ to admire the work of local artist Yvonne Braithwaite, while events like Islander Kelp and Northcoast Nature Photography Workshops showcase the islandâs creative spirit.
